“This is music you can’t buy because it’s not recorded yet,” said Darcy James Argue, the 39-yr-old Vancouver native, now Brooklynite, and bandleader of Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society (DJASS).
Argue was referring to DJASS’s All In, an unrecorded deep cut performed at TD Ottawa Jazz Festival’s OLG After Dark Series on Monday June 23rd at 10:30 PM. The collaborative orchestral oeuvre is a crowd-pleaser for traditional and experimental jazz lovers alike; its complex layers but familiar tones leaves something to enjoy for everyone.
The Grammy and JUNO award-winning band is forever touted as a must-see by music critics. Argue is not afraid to introduce minimalist and indie rock sounds to an atypical big-band jazz ensemble. The compositions have a mashup of flows; imagine Maria Schneider but less subtle.
Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society is on tour and can be found next on Tuesday, July 8 2014 at 7:30 PM at the Jazz Standard on 116 E 27th Street, New York, New York.
