Morning Metal – May 31st @ Cafe Dekcuf: INHIBITORS, Equalizer, Path of the Black Leaves, Minds of Men, Project Orion, Tongue Eating Louse Live Review
Inhibitors – May 31st, 2014
Bonesaw Productions Presents:
INHIBITORS, Equalizer, Path of the Black Leaves, Minds of Men, Project Orion, Tongue Eating Louse
On May 31st, Ottawa’s progressive metal veterans, INHIBITORS, hung up their hats to a full house at Cafe Dekcuf in Ottawa, Ontario.
The night opened up nicely with mixed genres with opening deathcore band from Cardinal, ON – Tongue Eating Louse going straight into some very slow, very heavy and very sludgy headbangers. Dekcuf was just starting up, so unfortunately not many people showed up for the first little bit, but they still had a pretty decent turnout. Next up was Ottawa metalcore newcomers, Project Orion. They played through a thrashing set ending with their EP’s closer, “Kiss From Hades”, with lead vocalist Adrian Dionne encouraging the crowd as much as possible to join in.
Third on the bill was even newer metalcore band, Minds of Men. These guys opened up with a new song, “Correlations” and ended the show with a cover and an original, which also happened to be two encores. Minds of Men brought the spectators to an incredibly melodic and heavy world with brand new songs and their cover of Avenged Sevenfold’s “Unholy Confessions”. They moved the crowd the most last night with vocalist Mitch Foster running around the crowd rather than the stage.
Path of the Black Leaves was up next to bring seven strings more glory. They followed nicely with their infusion of progressive metal and deathcore, utilizing every aspect the stage offered.
Inhibitors main support, which features the band whose drummer organized the show and represents many artists in the Ottawa region, Matt “Bonesaw” Moreau, so it’s no wonder they were on the bill directly before the headliner. Equalizer, who have brought hardcore to a new level played through quite a heavy, fast and melodic set with tracks off their EP, “Drop The Gloves”.
Closing the night (and I say night because it was closing in around midnight) was the main reason everyone was there – Inhibitors. Sadly, I was unable to see them prior to this and was saddened by the news that this was their last show. Nevertheless, I didn’t let that stop me from enjoying their set opener… which included the best cover of the Ghostbusters theme song. Inhibitors smashed through so many crowd pleasers, it was unbelievable that this band was going separate ways.
Guitarist Dan Petti thanked fans, friends and family – all of whom were in attendance, for their years of support and letting them practice for 10 years in the family basement. The audience was more than happy to hear more tracks, finally ending with their single “Shylock” – which is still available online! I thoroughly enjoyed inhibitors for their last set, not feeling any signs of half-assing and as if it was their first show all over again.
We can only hope these musicians form other bands and create even more ridiculous shredders. All of the sets played through a YC Drum Company kit created and owned by Jordan Gauthier and made for Minds of Men‘s Mike Germain.
