Ottawa duo Bosveld has just released a cassette called Catalysts Mixtape in advance of their debut full-length release later this year. This is a band that was formed in early 2013 and subtly taken Ottawa by storm. The band is following in the footsteps of Ottawa label Bruised Tongue by making its mixtape in the actual form of a cassette tape, which is being released through Hamilton’s HAVN. This mixtape is already an early contender for our favourite local releases of the year, as it asserts itself by using unique, intricate instrumentation and well-imagined atmospherics to create a world one could easily get lost in. Fans of artists like Bon Iver or Sigur Rós should take particular interest, as Bosveld is exploring similar musical frontiers.
The duo consists of Théan Slabbert a.k.a. Velodrones (vox, guitars, electronics, words) and Jeremy Mulder (grand piano, vox, electronics, saxophone, guitars), both seemingly coming into their element when coupled on stage with their multi-instrumental talents. Théan also is part of Claude Munson & the Storm Outside, another local act that is doing great things. Bosveld has been making waves lately as we co-presented them at St. Alban’s Church opening for Leif Vollebekk on January 30, as well as playing regular shows all over town. We’ve locked them down to open for The Wind & The Wild at Raw Sugar on March 7.
