Last night I went to the Mayfair Theatre to see FILMAGE: The Story of DESCENDENTS/ALL. It is a feature length documentary that tells the story of two of the most influential yet lesser known and under appreciated punk bands.
The Descendents are often recognized as the founders of Pop-Punk. The innovators that showed people you could write about how you feel, you could write a love song, and still be punk. They were masters of their instruments and full of energy.
The documentary takes you through over 30 years of line-up changes for both bands, Descendents and ALL, as recounted by the band members themselves. I couldn’t believe how many times people came and went in this band, yet the mastermind, drummer William Stevenson, always remained. There is a tone of amazing raw live low-fi footage from basement shows from the late 70’s to high definition coverage of their latest reunion on such large sets at Coachella. To top it all off they interview more than 50 different people who attribute much of their love for music and success to the Descendents and ALL. Big names such as Dave Grohl, Fat Mike, Joey Cape of Lagwagon, members of Bad Religion, members of Pennywise, Mark Hoppus of Blink 182, and the list goes on.
If you missed it last night, don’t fret, you cant see Filmage tonight January 21 at 9:45 at Mayfair Theatre at 1074 Bank St. Do yourself a favour, and don’t miss it twice, check out the trailer below.
